How to choose the perfect garden corner sofa
Buying a corner sofa for the garden can be a big investment, so it's important you choose the right one for your space. Here are the elements to consider before you make a purchase:
Material
No one wants to end up replacing their outdoor furniture a year or two down the line, so you'll need to choose a sofa made with durable, weather-resistant materials. As most garden sofas will have cushions of some sort, it's likely you'll need to either remove them to store separately, or protect them with a high-quality furniture cover.
One of the few brands offering all-weather sofas is Maze, which has a range of sofas with 'outdoor fabric', which you can leave out in the rain. Otherwise, you'll need to choose between sofas made with:
- Metal - try to find powder-coated metal for extra durability
- Wood - you'll need to sand and re-seal wood furniture every year, or store it under cover
- Faux rattan/wicker - a plastic option, the base will be waterproof but it's worth storing it under cover to avoid grime build-up between the woven strands
- Plastic - this option may be waterproof and inexpensive, but could also be less durable and less sustainable than other materials
As a general rule, look out for water- and UV-resistant materials when choosing a corner sofa - both for the frame and cushions.
Modular designs
If you want to be able to use your corner sofa flexibly, it's worth considering a modular design; some sofas come in sections, which you can detach and move. Depending on the design, you may be able to change the size and shape of the sofa, and create separate armchairs and footrests; a great option to have if you often host family and friends.
Cushion thickness
Outdoor sofa cushions vary in thickness and quality. If you're considering a sofa with removable cushions, take a moment to look at their design. Thinner cushions may look sleek and pack down more easily for storage, but might not give you the comfort you need if you're relaxing on them for a few hours.
If your sofa comes with thin cushions, you may also need to spend more money on extra scatter cushions once it's set up.
Style
For most people, a corner sofa is a large piece of furniture that'll take up a fair amount of real estate in the garden and draw the eye of any visitors. So, take the time to find a style that works well for the space and complements the planting and garden features nearby.
Consider the colour, material and design - and if in doubt, a neutral, classic, Scandi-style sofa suits most spaces.
