Piet's intentions behind the project is for it to be more than an extension of the terrace of the restaurant, but instead a place to 'linger'.

"The idea behind the courtyard is that it should be a place where people can truly immerse themselves in the garden and appreciate both the plants and the surrounding art," he says.

Piet Oudolf produced the a plan for the entire site in 2022, and this is the second phase of the design, which 'forms the heart of the Vandalorum', according to Elna Svenle, the museum's director.

The garden at the Vandalorum is Piet Oudolf's first at a Nordic cultural institution. Piet's previous work includes Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, and the garden of the restaurant Noma in Copenhagen. He specialises in naturalistic planting design, rooted in the location and surrounding nature, creating gardens that evolve and captivate throughout all four seasons.
